From 26 October myAustrian flies twice a week to colourful Marrakesh. The ‘Pearl of the South’ is not only an extremely interesting and popular destination but also the venue for this year’s UN-Climate conference in November. In the spring months there are also numerous cultural and sports events in Morocco, including international music festivals and elaborate desert rallies such as the ‘Marathon des Sables’, which attracts visitors from all over the world.
The historic centre of Marrakesh, together with the Agdal- and Menara-Gardens, was declared an UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985 and, together with the cities of Meknes, Fes and Rabat, belongs to the four Imperial cities of Morocco. Marrakesh is located at the foot of the High Atlas mountains and offers a variety of architecturally important buildings. In the centre of the medina of Marrakesh is the Jemaa el-Fnaa Square. This square is one of the main attractions of the city and is today a popular meeting point of the different cultures. Here you will find numerous little market stalls – the so-called souks – as well as all kinds of travelling market traders, storytellers and street artists. For a day trip there is also the harbour town of Essaouira – with its mysterious, crooked alleys and the harbour, an ideal place to relax and breathe in the way of life.
In the forthcoming winter timetable Austrian Airlines flies every Wednesday and Saturday to Marrakesh.
