United Airlines has been ranked number one in the 2017 Global Green Rankings by Newsweek magazine. The study examined the commitment to environmental protection of the world’s largest publicly traded companies.
The award comes after United was honoured last year by the industry magazine Air Transport World. In recognition of its exemplary ecological innovations and measures, the magazine named United Eco Airline of the Year. Air Transport World also honoured United Airlines’ Eco-Skies programme.
Eco-Skies includes United’s commitment to protecting the environment and all the steps towards a sustainable future that are taken every day. For example, United is the first airline in the United States to use sustainably produced biofuel on scheduled air services on a remarkable scale – an important milestone for the aviation industry as for the first time alternative, low-carbon fuel was used during commercial operations, outside of demonstration and tests.
